Letter from the Faroese peace movement to the presidents of the US, Russia, China, African Union, India and the European Union requesting a peace and dialogue meeting as soon as possible
Dear
Mr. Donald Trump, Mr. Vladimir Putin, Mr. Xi Jinping, Mr. Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco, Smt. Droupadi Murmu and Mr. António Costa
We from the Faroese peace movement will kindly request the esteemed presidents to meet in a peace and dialogue meeting as soon as possible, willingly in our capital Tórshavn, but wherever it may be, because we live in an uncertain time of struggle, where there is more focus on enemy images and polarization than friendships and humanity.
Too many innocent people are dying these days because of wars and unrest in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa. We must work together to prevent the atrocities of war. As leaders of the world's major powers, you have both the opportunity and the responsibility to change the policy from war and unrest to peace and humanity.
The ideology of peace has the spoken and written word - togetherness, communication and diplomatic conversation as its foremost, significant and only "weapon" to achieve progress regarding peace and humanity between the countries and peoples of the world. Pacifism is the foundation of the peace ideology, where emphasis is placed on preventing any war and violence and with a constant focus on disarmament. Human rights, equality and understanding of different cultures are core values in the peace movement's work.
We in the peace movement therefore urgently want to shed light on the importance of leaders of the world's countries - both at home and abroad - adopting the ideology of peace and working in accordance with it. Because we believe that the ideology of peace is the counterbalance needed to prevent polarization, war rhetoric and the way the world's countries and peoples are divided into either friends or enemies.
The ideology of peace is therefore largely about showing charity towards all the peoples of the world, not only towards friends and those with whom we agree, but also towards enemies and those with whom we disagree. Showing charity towards all is not easy to demonstrate in practice, but if it is done, the conditions for peace, cohesion and respect for different cultures and international law are very good.
The Faroe Islands are constitutionally part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and although we do not have a military, we feel the consequences of the unrest that is currently in the world.
During World War II, the Faroe Islands lost over 200 sailors due to the war. Perhaps the Faroe Islands, in relation to population, lost the most citizens during the Second World War.
The world today is so intertwined that wars and conflicts affect more or less every country in the world. That is also why we as Faroese see ourselves as part of the world community and that we have a responsibility to contribute to peace between countries.
In this context, we have recently arranged peace initiatives in the Faroe Islands, including peace marches, a peace concert and peace conference. We in the Faroese peace movement also want to be part of a larger network of peace movements in the world, so that the message of peace, dialogue and humanity stands stronger internationally.
With this letter, we will on behalf of the Faroese Peace movement appeal to you esteemed Presidents to have a meeting together, striving for an international agenda for peace, dialog and humanity; and to start such an agenda today rather than tomorrow.
We believe that you, as Presidents of the world's superpowers, have the strength, will and human understanding needed to make the agenda of peace, cohesion and mutual dialogue a top priority.
This letter will be sent to you esteemed presidents through your embassies in Denmark respectively. The letter will be sent directly to the African Union and the EU via its homepages.
For information purposes, this letter will also be sent to the Secretary General of the UN, Mr. António Guterres, the prime minister of the Faroe Islands, Mr. Aksel V. Johannesen and the prime minister of Denmark, Mrs. Mette Frederiksen.
